They reinforce the concepts taught in the text by placing the ideas in interesting real-life contexts or puzzles, and they also introduce new ideas. This book provides him with the hands on work that he needs in order to grasp the concepts. English ISBN Take a lopsided quadrilateral and erect equilateral triangles on its sides so that their third vertices point alternatingly into and out of the quadrilateral.

After that, if you look closely, the whole book IS indeed written as a deductive, formal system of geometry that starts form postulates and proves the theorems used the lesson texts include the postulates, theorems, and definitions.

However, I would say that the emphasis of this book is definitely on applications, understanding the theorems, and deductive reasoning, but not on the nature of the deductive system as a whole. In the example pages below, the exercise about Alcoa building and exercise 34 are where the student just gives the reasons for the statements in the proof, whereas problems 33 and 35 ask for complete proofs. I was a bit disappointed how the text handled Pi. The author discusses the limit of the perimeters of regular polygons inscribed in a circle. He says the limit exists and is Pi: I don't have a problem with the method used as such -- it is mathematically very sound. I just wish the author would have tied this in with what students already have studied about Pi in middle school or algebra. Such as: I'm just not sure if students who are not mathematically mature can grasp from the exposition of Archimedes's method that this is how we get Pi.

With the area of a circle, I was hoping the author would have dealt explicitly with the approach we commonly see shown informally in middle-school textbooks, which is dividing the circle into sectors, and then considering either isosceles triangles or parallelograms whose total area approaches the area of the circle as the number of such sectors increases.

I only say this because students have often been exposed to this idea already. However, these little "lacks" and I'm sure other instructors can find a few others do not take away from the tremendous quality of the book! I think Jacobs' Geometry is a highly enjoyable and excellent textbook, and I can heartily recommend it for a high school geometry text. Most parents will probably also enjoy the Enhanced Teacher Guide for Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding , which contains answers to all the exercises the book itself has some answers at the back, but not that many.

The Teacher's Guide includes Lesson plans, blackline transparency masters, answers to all exercises, plus 25 Geometer's Sketchpad projects. Also, Ask Dr. Callahan company sells a DVD with video lessons that accompany Jacob's book.

A few advanced mathematics students could benefit from studying a more "rigorous" geometry text. By that I mean a text that puts more emphasis on writing proofs. But, Jacobs text doesn't have to be a bad choice even for those students because it does also have challenging exercises. Also, another great textbook that I have reviewed is Geometry: A Guided Inquiry.

For that book, you can purchase a home study companion which uses Geometer's Sketchpad. In fact, I'll probably find it hard to choose between that and Jacobs' text for my children when they get to that level. Update as of You can view the entire chapters 1, 8, and 16 in a massive PDF sample they offer. Moise and Floyd L. Downs, Jr. I have looked at several geometry books, my brother took the sucky new saxon geometry and whined about it all year.

I purchased this book which explains the concepts well and gives plenty of exercises, as well as algebra review. I am having fun and jamming through geometry with this book! If anyone is struggling with geometry, try this book. We used Teaching Textbooks, but my son was struggling. This book provides him with the hands on work that he needs in order to grasp the concepts.

I wished I'd had it 5 months ago! There has been no other text in Geometry that we have liked as much as this one. Our teachers are pleased with it as well. Amazon reviews let you know what teachers and students think about texts. These comments on the third edition are based on close reading, not classroom experience.

Review of Harold Jacobs Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding (third edition)

With an initial review up, I hope to see what others have to say. Geometry is my research area.

I worked in publishing as an editor for more than 20 years. I have read every word of this book and worked all of the exercises because I was its freelance editor. I am a knowledgeable, interested party. The third edition towers over the second edition, which is described by its most recent Amazon reviewer, Edward Lee, as "the best geometry text in existence, bar none" January 25, Begin by noticing the use color throughout, then notice how color has been used to make key material in the text and diagrams stand out more clearly.

Detailed comparisons will show you that every part of the book has been scrutinized and reworked, adding a host of new examples and exercises, fine-tuning the concepts and wording. Coordinates are used throughout, so that analytic methods are now another tool rather than the subject of a special chapter, late in the book.

Chapter 1, An Introduction to Geometry is completely new and shows the reader how geometry has been used from the dawn of history, in the East and the West, to design cities, measure the earth's circumference, design pyramids, and figure land taxes.

Something may look sensible and even be used, but we need to be careful and check things.

Not everything that is plausible is true. And so we are off to Chapter 2 on deductive reasoning, and then on to all of geometry, including solid geometry Chapter 15 and non-Euclidean geometry Chapter 16 optional in most first courses.

Jacobs put all of his art into this revision. It is his best effort. Donald J. Albers begins his foreword "This is one of the great geometry books of all time. It is the finest example of instructional artistry I have ever encountered.

Think of it as a continent you might visit and explore. The lessons in this book are station stops on your tour.

At each stop, Jacobs gives you a sense of what there is to see and explore. The exercise sequences are side trips for individuals or groups.

It is these jaunts that give you a real feel for the place, they build the muscle you need for further exploration and show you small wonders or glimpses of distant peaks. Albers calls these exercises "the beating heart of the book.

Take a lopsided quadrilateral and erect equilateral triangles on its sides so that their third vertices point alternatingly into and out of the quadrilateral.

Connect these four new vertices in the order of the sides of the quadrilateral they are derived from. You will see that no matter what your original quadrilateral was, the new quadrilateral is of a very special sort.

The exercise is straightforward, and the result is surprising. Some readers may want to understand the geometry that lies behind this observation. That goal is like the wish to scale a distant peak.

Many may feel the call, but only some will set out and reach the summit. Geometric proofs, sometimes so mysterious, are our search for an answer to the question "Why?

There is also a separate Test Bank. In 10 years, I expect to see a crop of geometers who cut their teeth on this book.

Suitable for either classroom use or self-paced study, it uses innovative discussions, cartoons, anecdotes, examples, and exercises that unfailingly capture and hold student interest. This edition is the Jacobs for a new generation.

It has all the features that have kept the text in class by itself for nearly 3 decades, all in a thoroughly revised, full-color presentation that shows today's students how fun geometry can be. The text remains proof-based although the presentation is in the less formal paragraph format. The approach focuses on guided discovery to help students develop geometric intuition.
