It has the easiest type face to read. The explanations of the language are clear. The drills support what you are trying to learn. The pronunciation guide for words is the clearest of any of books of this type that I saw. Learning a language requires a lot of time and effort. This book doesn't eliminate those two requirements but it makes it a little easier to do it.
Thank you Gail Stein for making this book as clear as can be. I spent over a month trying to work with avbooks support, but they failed to resolve the CD issue. I would give this product a higher rating based on the book alone, but without the audio functioning properly, the package as a whole is unsatisfactory.
The French language is full of silent letters and pronunciations that contrast phonetically with English phonics, so the audio CD is vital to "Learning French," and this product fails without it.
On a more basic level, I recommend the "French in 10 minutes a day" book. It's great for beginners, and the illustrations are a great aid in quick and easy learning. The "Easy French Reader" is another recommendation, although it is in a different class. You will need a French-English dictionary free online or Babelfish free online to use the book as a beginner. But in terms of reading comprehension versus effort expended, this well-designed book has paid off more than any other for me so far.
After getting through only the first 15 pages, my comprehension of French increased significantly, and I gained a lot of confidence and momentum! I have a mixed review about this book. I like that it has good pronunciation guides for the words - this was what attracted me to the book. The vocab is a good intro vocab - enough to get a nice start in the language.
It is geared toward a traveler learning the language. It provides a few exercises to practice, but only about questions which is just not enough if you're looking to practice what you learned. I wouldn't be quick to recommend it to the serious learner of French, but I would to a new beginner. The student myself was not very conscientious.
Did learn a few phrases that helped in France. I got this book as a gift and they loved it. Gail Stein does an outstanding job of helping you pronounce the nasal sounds and building your vocabulary. In additon, the Idiot's books always are superior to the Dummies books because of their organized layout. One person found this helpful. Learning a new language should be from several sources. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French is an excellent complement once you get the hang of French pronunciation the website has excellent help with this and then this book is a relief.
There are very helpful tips to help you learn and remember key details. I'm up to Chapter 5 so far and I love every page.
The CD is very helpful again with the pronunciation and listening skills. Highly recommended as a complement to learning French. Good grammar book that I used to accompany Duolingo and Rosetta Stone. CD leaves something to be desired, however.
