I use some pages regularly, and sometimes I just pull it down and flip it open to see what I'm going to learn about next.

As a matter of fact, I have two copies of this book myself It has gotten better and better since it was first printed 40 years ago. And the massive book is filled with personal stories and anecdotes, making it a friendly and easy read — not at all like a textbook.
Emery offers practical advice on everything from gardening and canning to raising animals and churning butter. Gardener's Yoga. The Hands-On Home. The Dutch Oven Cookbook. I like this book because of the variety of information.
It is a one-stop shop and has more information than any other book I've read thus far. Plus, I find it very interesting what this author and others do on their farms.
I also have Storey's Basic Country Skills. Between the two, you have more knowledge than you'll know what to do with. I recommend buying this book if you are seriously thinking about living off your land in the country. It will be something you refer back to time and again. In my husband, our four year old son and I moved from the city to We lived for two years without running water or electricity.
From my first copy of The Encyclopedia of Country Living I learned how to milk a goat and raise my hogs. I learned how to dress out a large animal and brooder chicks with kerosene lanterns. I'm on my second copy now, which my husband had drilled with a three hole punch to give it more staying power.
I highly recommend this book to learn the life-style of self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency is a mind set and a life-style. I highly recommend it. My son is 18 years old and a freshman in college now. I am an old woman of nearly I wouldn't give up my memories or skills for anything. This is a fantastic reference book, and really, the only one you'll ever need.
One other note: I wrote Ms. Emery about some health problems I was having and she wrote me back! I'll never forget her kindness to a stranger.
One of my deepest regrets is I did not get to meet her. As a struggling author here on Amazon I find her achievements amazing. I hope her family reads this and knows how much her writing meant to our family. God bless you, Ms. I hope you can know how much your postcard meant to me. I have the original book by Carla Emery. I, myself and my family spent the last 40 years with it. As my years carry on, I want each of my grown children to have a copy.
We searched all these years for copies of this. Now I'm in luck. You have come out with the 40th Anniversary Edition. As with the original, it is filled with humor and knowledge Sincerely, Kathie Current.
This is your book. I bought my first copy of this book 20 years ago. I was moving from the city to the country and this book was A LOT of fun! It's like having one of those neighbors that knows about or has tried a lot of different things on a farm, but it's in book form.
I pulled my 20 year old copy out again recently when researching fish farming and decided to get a fresh copy.
As you can see from the pic, the book has been well used over the years. Decades ago I purchased this book when it was a primitive spiral bound monster. Over the years that copy came apart and was lost over time, so I purchased a newer copy that is put together differently.
Living in the city, I'm not likely to ever need all of the information contained in this book, but so many parts of it are still valuable. I'm a firm believer that many of the older methods are still the best methods and save a great deal of money. While we were in our home state WI over the holidays, I was telling an old friend about this book and just had a copy of it sent to her as a thank you for the wonderful meal and hospitality her and her husband provided during our visit.
I'm hoping to have a few backyard chickens soon, so this book is likely to be a valuable resource for that venture too. It has helped me in the past with gardening and canning information too. I keep mine on my bookshelf along with many other go-to books. My copy says "sixth printing of ninth edition, ".
Unless someone is trying to be totally self-sufficient, they're not likely to need everything contained in this book, but anyone trying to grow, can or raise anything on their own will find this wonderful book beneficial.
One person found this helpful. This is a book I bought for myself about twenty years ago, it has instructions from delivering a baby to making a candle with string and bacon grease. If you're interested in a country experience, a real country experience, you'll love this book. Grow and can of freeze your own vegetables. If you loved the Foxfire books you're going to flip over this one.
