But…nothing about the life of Nick Manoloff. Published in by M. Cole Publishing Company: Cover price: No performance history, no recordings, nobody claiming to be a student of his…nothing. You know, for someone that had no track record, Manoloff wrote a pretty decent series of books.

He even managed to live up to the advertised expectations on the cover. Old guitar books taught the use of the capo. Playing popular music today requires fast changes from one key to another, and the forefinger [has] replaced the capo. On that same page, Manoloff defined the three principal chords of a key. You know, the Tonic, Sub-Dominant, and the Dominant.

For some reason, he felt the need to use the analogy of Owner, Assistant Superintindent, and Superintindent as helpful reminders of the principal chords.

Beginning on page 53, and running until page 62, was the good stuff.

Every few measures, a scale was inserted to connect one chord to another — again in the manner of Lang or Lucas. Included with book one, was a paper chord guide wheel, which taught the circle of fifths, and the principal chords of each key. It was a useful learning tool, and I have seen grey, and pink, versions of the wheel.

Speaking as a guitar teacher, Manoloff did a good job with the first volume of his series. If a student wanted to learn the accompaniment styles of Eddie Lang, Nick Lucas, or even Leon Redbone, I would definitely start with this book.

My next two blog posts will investigate Volume 2, and 3, of the Manoloff series. Randy Buckner.

Hoover Music Co. Springfield, Mo. Yeah I have been trying to find out about him but there is nothing on the web. Surprising when you think of his influence -Chuck Berry and BB King mention starting with his books, and.. The Cole Co milked his books for decades changing the cover to made them seem modern. His instruction books were largely hillbillystyle ie bass melody arrangements- some reminiscent of Maybelle Carter.

I found out the man who bought Cole, Shepard Stern, lived in Chicago, but died 8 months ago. You are commenting using your WordPress.
