The second part will then analyse how Rammstein can be read by different politically orientated interpretive communities. Describing Rammstein: This is accompanied by sections of electronic beats, and synthesizer riffs and interludes — which often add a gothic or science fiction flavour to their songs.
A number of songs, such as Engel and Nebel, also feature melodious female vocals. Images of general social transgression include the band appearing in guises referencing organised crime, such as costumes imitating the films Reservoir Dogs and Goodfellas, as well as appearing dressed as women, and being pictured as naked women. However, the spectacle of Rammstein really consolidates in their remarkable stage shows.
A steel cage design dominated the Live Aus Berlin set, surrounded on three sides by four-story scaffold platforms slung with lighting equipment. Tubes projected from the stage like a cross between industrial piping and batteries of naval cannons. On the second level drummer Christoph Schneider sat in front of a huge industrial fan, and a dense wall of lights reached-up for several stories. The ground-level wall featured an automatic door opening onto center stage, allowing singer Lindemann to disappear between and during songs for costume changes.
Whether intended or not, this door and its curtains at times resembled female genitalia, thus creating an impression of Lindemann being reborn onto the stage in different guises from the womb of this industrial complex. Both shows involved intense flashes of light, and plumes of steam, sparks and flames.
Smoke pervaded the stages. During both performances large spotlights intermittently strafed the sky, stage and audience. Kruspe wearing a black pseudo-baroque jacket; keyboardist Christian Lorenz and guitarist Paul Landers wearing lederhosen; and singer Lindemann wearing a leather tunic. Band members wore dark make-up and lip-stick, and had exposed skin smothered in dark grease. During these performances the guitarists periodically acted as automatons, remaining expressionless and as motionless as possible, or moving in a jerky, unnatural manner.
Lindemann has variously shot sparks and flares from archery bows, pistols and blunderbusses. This transgressive tradition continued on the Made in Germany tour, with Lindemann using a large cannon resembling male genitalia to fire foam into the audience, simulating ejaculation. While the medium of video could allow Rammstein to expand on their technophilia in spectacular ways, their music clips instead place more emphasis on the gothic, along with social transgression.
Interpreting Rammstein: My analysis will focus on three political subjectivities: Indeed, by oscillating to and fro or back and forth, the metamodern negotiates between the modern and the postmodern. Advocates of Reader-Response theories have long argued that: Readers make meaning, but not in conditions of their own choosing.
But in reality only those with sufficient wealth can fully enjoy the benefits of the capitalist spectacle, whose opulence is extracted out of the lives and dreams of the exploited. Athletes are shown in scenes of Athenian-style physical competition, and their bare bodies are the focus of the piece. Footage of sports such as fencing, rowing and diving is presented, along with athletes performing exhibitions in unison — Riefenstahl originally idealizing the athletic Aryan physique.
One ant addresses the other ants from atop a tall pillar, in a format that recalls the Nuremburg Rallies, inspiring them to unite and attack the bugs in military formation — swarming and killing them.
Although, on the surface, the totalitarian master also issues stern orders compelling us to renounce pleasure and to sacrifice ourselves in some higher cause, his effective injunction, discernible between the lines, is a call to unconstrained transgression. Far from imposing on us a firm set of standards to be complied with, the totalitarian master suspends moral punishment. His secret injunction is: Left-wing audiences, then, can appreciate Rammstein for the transgressive and utopic elements of style, cultural tropes and subject matter that alleviate social alienation, as previously discussed.
However, additionally the left can interpret Rammstein as having politically radical messages embedded in their performances. As mentioned, Amerika has a quite explicit message against American cultural hegemony, and also links their commercial power to war. In short, Rammstein liberates these sinthomes from their Nazi-articulation: This is also the key to the music video for Pussy, which effectively criticises the commodification of sex, and over- sexualization of the media by over-identifying and taking the process to its logical conclusion: Critically, however, it nevertheless takes toward it as if it does exist.
Rammstein have thrived by pushing boundaries and creating controversy — making them politically contentious — but in doing so their true political messages have remained veiled.
