I may not go back and read this again because it wounded me but I will not deny that it made me cry a lot, and not the eye-moistening-kind-of-cry. Something that changed their lives forever.
How do you come back from that? Even though the novel ended on a better note than I expected, it is not that easy to mend those scars, is it? Though, in many ways, Aks is a story of love, it is also a story where Umera Ahmed took a bold step and tackled the social taboo of pedophilia. There were not one, but two characters who were victims of pedophiles.
The second character took me completely by surprise and shock. I was horrified to learn how far back this disease ran in this story. How actions of one man affected someone else later on. And I respect that a lot. This book also reignited my love for Umera Ahmed that I had kind of faded in the midst of all these years. It reminded me how an incredibly awesome of a writer she is.
She has this uncanny ability to hook readers into her stories and forget their surroundings altogether. Even when I was hurting. Aks deeply affected me as a reader. I was blown away by the intricate story telling ability of Umera Ahmed. She presented deep and complex characters in the form of Aks, Sherdil and Shehrbano.
She presented humanized characters with all their faults and self-destructive nature. They caused greater mess than anyone else. I honestly think the writer went a little overboard with her character at the end. Still, everything about this book was brilliant.

Everytime I read one of umera Ahmed's novels I decide this one is her best, but then I read the next and know this is the one and this goes on, she never ceases to amaze me.
But this time umera Ahmed has out done herself. This time she has written a novel so profound, so deep that it shook me to my very core. I always read the preface of her novels, I don't really know why but I simply love them and I went back to this novel's preface time and again. In the first quarter of the novel I couldn't make myself like the character aks, I had given in to ghuria and then with a bolt I realized that they are the same. At that time of course I didn't really know they are, I meant as their personalties and stuff. I actually liked the shehr bano and sher dil's couple, the little tidbits, those gesture were essence of the novel and it broke my heart when they fell apart.
I hated what happened with shehr bano but the thing that left me dumbfounded was misal's agony and her path for finding love. So I'll go ahead and say that although aks deserved what she got but shehr bano did not deserve what she got. I may not go back and read this again because it wounded me but I will not deny that it made me cry a lot, and not the eye-moistening-kind-of-cry.

The real touch and the Trauma she has explained that a child faces is so close to reality.
She also maintained the book suspense very well. I couldn't predict what was going to happen next! I took me a long time to start reading this book but I couldn't keep it down until it was finished. This is one book I choose to carry with me wherever I went! View all 4 comments. Sep 26, Umar Iqbal rated it it was amazing. Another best one by Umera Ahmed. Ahmed makes it the centre of the novel and make the book an outclass.
The changing situation described so nicely making the writer deeply involved in the situation and character.
Oct 18, Naseer-ul-Hassan Rehman rated it really liked it. And whatever you spend — indeed, Allah is Knowing of it. Lessons Learned: Aks proved it that by sharing happiness one get manifold. Surely with every difficulty there is relief. Allah will grant after hardship, ease. Jul 19, Rija rated it did not like it. I think what Umera Ahmed had here was an excellent plot line, a brilliant character and some really hard hitting realities of life.
However, I felt that she failed to deliver what she promised to deliver. Or maybe my expectations were too high. Whatever the reason may be, I think this novel was not as strong as it had the potential to be. The story was rushed! She started wayy too many plot lines and probably forgot all about them by the time end came near. So obviously there were a lot of loop holes.
Every single chapter started with the SAME scenario, which may have been a brilliant move if executed well enough. There were too many spoilers in the book. It was almost such a stupid move that I had no inclination to even finish reading it. I mean what's the point to even continue? I know we usually read for the insights that our writer has to offer. The "pearls" I like to call them. But honestly, if I sit down and jot together all the excerpts that were really inspiring or 'quotable' , I think it would all come down to a Single page, and I'm being generous.
In a nutshell. I think this was just a desperate attempt to fulfill the quota of 'episodes' in the digest that this story was published in. And the writer, as much as I might love her, destroyed the strength of her plot and her characters by trying to oversell it. And the outcome was just BAD. And very disappointing. Mar 06, Haleema sadia rated it really liked it Shelves: I never expected this book to be what it was. Umera ahmed's writings are always great! But this was the most diverse one among her works For me this book is my emerald..
This is one great and inspiring book of her I think.
The characters were good but strange.. I still couldn't understand that why aks refused aibak again and again. This was strange.

Oct 18, Usama Ali rated it really liked it. In the beginning, this novel was quite boring and confusing. Once again, she confused her readers with different names of same person.
However, the way she raised very important issue is awesome. Apr 09, Memoona Rehman rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a complex, gripping and engaging story. It made me wish that I could somehow split Sherdil into two so that both my ships could sail.
Aks is one story that I promised myself not to read again because it was traumatizing and left me gloomy for days yet I absolutely loved it. Though I might read it again because I've obviously grown up since I last read it and I think I'll understand it much better now. Dec 16, Muhammad Jahangeer Thaheem rated it liked it. One of best writings of umera ahmad. Nov 13, Bina Khan rated it it was amazing. I have been saying this since I started reading the novel in digest.
Every month I would wait for the digest to be released, every time I'll read it as quick as I can, every time it will leave me mesmerized, inspired, shocked and then again the wait would begin. The story is shocking, yes. But the way the characters deal with the issues they keep facing is both impressive and inspiring. The novel tells you the extent to which a person can be tested, also, the strength it takes to accept all challenges and still come out victoriously. Everyone should read it.
The characters are very strong. You'll fall in love with them. And there's a shocking twist. The novel will grip you from there. May 11, Shabana Mukhtar rated it really liked it Shelves: Like all episodic novels, I didn't read it back then; except for a couple of pages. Years later, when I found a pdf, I thought it was time to read it. Review Initially, the book didn't interest me much. I found it jumpy and vague to the point of being distracting.
But then I understood the characters and thereafter, it was okay. The book is about I am not going to spoil anything by listing those here. I just felt it was too confusing, and unnecessarily so. Jun 07, Namoos Qasmi rated it liked it Shelves: Idea was good, plot was good.
