It is arguably a special case in planetary science, the Earth being the only known life-bearing planet.
There are both reductionist and holistic approaches to Earth sciences. The formal discipline of Earth sciences may include the study of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, oceans and biosphere, as well as the solid earth. Typically, Earth scientists will use tools from physics, chemistry, biology, chronology, and mathematics to build a quantitative understanding of how the Earth system works, and how it evolved to its current state.
The Earth system, like the human body, comprises diverse components that interact in complex ways. We need to understand the Earth's atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere as a single connected system. Our planet is changing on all spatial and temporal scales.

Dari hasil pengujian tersebut, batulempung Formasi Subang di daerah penelitian memiliki ketahanan rendah. Kandungan mineral monmorilonit dan pirit yang ditemukan pada sampel batulempung Formasi Subang menjadi faktor penyebab rendahnya nilai ketahanan batuan tersebut.
Abstract — Currently, a large-scale development is being planned around the Sumedang area, West Java, which includes the construction of the Kertajati international airport, Cisumdawu highway, Ujungjaya industrial centers, and Cipanas Dam. These development activities can be constrained by geological engineering problems because the constructions are conducted on the claystone of the Subang Formation.
The type of this claystone is known to have a significant influence on the engineering activities because it easily slakes when in contact with air and water. The purpose of this study was to determine the durability characteristics of the Subang Formation claystone in the Ujungjaya Region, Sumedang Regency. The study was conducted with field observation and sampling of fresh undisturbed claystone.
The samples were taken and tested for their slake durability characteristics as well as analysis of clay minerals by X-Ray Diffraction. Based on the results, claystone of Subang Formation in the study area have a low durability.
The content of montmorillonite and pyrite that found in the sample into the factors causing the low value of the durability of claystone.
The researched area is located in Sukatani and surrounding areas, Purwakarta, West Java.
The area has a hilly geomorphological condition due to the influence of volcanic products in the form of lava, pyroclastic flows, and intrusion. In that area there are reports of landslide that occurred at several locations near residences. On that basis, a landslide susceptibility map was made to provide information about the distribution of susceptibility level of landslides in the researched area.
Maps which are used as the basis are maps of lithology, structural geology, slope, relative relief, soil wetness, and land cover. Those parameters are classified based on the landslide hazard evaluation factors. Landslide susceptibility index was obtained by using the method of analytic hierarchy process and by testing the consistency ratio.
Stages for merging maps used the overlaying method. In general, a landslide susceptibility map that has been made shows a good agreement with conditions in the field. A slope is the main control of factors that cause landslides.
