I had to buy it for a class, and when I saw the pricetag I was expecting some sort of giant tome; no, it's a little thing I can fit in my purse. At the end of the day its still a textbook, but not nearly as dry or unbearable as most.
As far as books I've been forced to pay a ridiculous amounts for, this was one of the better ones! If it had been a bit better priced I'd probably give it 5 stars for being a good, introductory book but again, the price of this thing is crazy. This book is awful to read! It feels incomplete like the author expects that you're learning the information from somewhere else and they are just there to refresh your memory.
I got more of a "frustrated" feeling than a "refreshed" one. I took this course Data Communications in Spring and the instructor asked the students to comment on the course and book. Here are some of the comments that were written about the book: How exactly are you supposed to learn when the author talks to you as if you already know the topic?
Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The book follows the standard scheme of selling freely available information for an extremely high price because it is used as a textbook.
I had to purchase this book for a class on business networks. The book does a horrible job of explaining the content, and it is almost universal in my class that students feel that way. There are two that feel it is fine, but they already work in the networking field and are just formalizing some education. This is not to say it has worthless content, it just doesn't fully develop or explain a fair amount of the content, it stays very cursory. That it has these types of issues and is in it's 9th edition speaks volumes about the college book market.
This book is godawful. Like a previous reviewer mentioned, its written as if you know everything And serves a refresher. I'm taking basic computer science class and know nothing about the subject. I thought to book would help explain a lot of things but it does not. Network Security Chapter 4: Network Management Chapter 4a: Microsoft Office Visio Chapter 5: Ethernet Switching Chapter 6: Wireless Networks I Chapter 6a: Wireless Networks II Chapter 8: Internetworking II Chapter Network Applications.
